Oral pouch nonwoven material selection determines whether a pouch can seal reliably, remain comfortable when wet and release a nicotine-free functional formula at the intended rate. Buyers often compare fabric only by appearance, but basis weight, fiber construction, pore structure, heat-seal layer and supplier consistency all affect production yield and user experience.

What does GSM mean for oral pouch fabric?

GSM means grams per square meter and describes the basis weight of the nonwoven. It is useful for specification control, but it does not independently define thickness, softness or permeability. Two materials with similar GSM can behave differently because their fibers, bonding method and sealable components differ.

A heavier material may feel more substantial and resist tearing, while a lighter material may conform more easily in the mouth. Neither is automatically better. The target must be evaluated with the intended fill weight, moisture and pouch geometry.

Define a usable heat-seal window

A commercial line needs more than one temperature setting that works once. Development should identify a practical range of temperature, pressure and dwell time that produces a strong seam without scorching, stiffness or fabric distortion. A narrow window can create rejects when machine speed, room conditions or incoming material varies slightly.

Seal tests should include dry units, conditioned units and pouches exposed to the intended moisture level. Inspect seam continuity, powder trapped in the seam, peel behavior and leakage after handling.

Balance permeability with powder retention

Open structure can promote saliva movement, but overly large or inconsistent pores may allow fine powder to escape. Very closed fabric may reduce leakage while slowing hydration and changing flavor onset. Particle-size distribution and fabric therefore need to be developed together.

A simple water-drop observation is useful for screening but should not be treated as a complete release test. Timed sensory work, mass uptake and product-specific analytical measurements provide better evidence.

Test comfort after hydration

Dry hand feel does not predict wet mouthfeel. Nonwoven can become softer, stiffer or rougher after absorbing saliva. Finished pouches should be assessed for edge feel, seam stiffness, swelling, folding, drip and integrity across the intended use period. Mini and slim formats may need different fabric because seam-to-surface ratio changes.

Qualify the fabric supplier and change control

The material specification should identify grade, construction, GSM range, thickness, seal behavior and relevant food-contact documentation. The supplier should notify the OEM before changing fiber source, bonding process, coating or manufacturing location. Incoming verification can combine certificate review with basis-weight, thickness and seal checks.

  • Test the fabric with the final formula, fill weight and moisture.
  • Define GSM and thickness tolerances rather than a nominal value only.
  • Establish a robust temperature-pressure-dwell seal window.
  • Evaluate powder leakage using the actual particle-size distribution.
  • Compare dry and hydrated mouthfeel over the intended use time.
  • Verify wet strength, seam integrity and transport durability.
  • Require supplier traceability and formal material change notification.

Is higher GSM always stronger?

No. Fiber selection, bonding and wet conditions influence strength, so GSM should not be used alone.

Can one nonwoven grade fit every pouch formula?

Not reliably. Moisture, oil, particle size and desired release behavior can change material performance.

Should buyers specify pore size?

Pore information can be useful, but it should be connected to powder retention, hydration and finished-product testing.
